Although five of the current bandmembers are originally from Morocco, their music bears influences not only from the Tamalink (Berber speaking Morocco) but |
|
also the folk music of Northern Algeria, Spain, South America and Africa, as well as various folk, pop and rock styles from the seventies onwards.

Malik and Mohammed.
|
Mohammed, also a poet and painter as well as musician and singer, wrote about a third of the songs on the band's first cd, "Moehand Amkran". The title is Tamazight (the Berber language) for "Abdelkarim". Abdelkarim Al Katabi started the Rif republic and led the 1921 - 1926 Riff war of independence against the Spanish.
Most songs the band sings are sung in Tamazight and the CD has these translated into French. Their website has the songs also translated into Dutch and English.
Here are some lyrics from one of the songs written by Mohammed:

Reytmas (Modern women)
Today's women are not those of past days.
Stand up sister, get rid of all the ropes.
The sun in the sky hangs like a light bulb
To show you the way, and show you the world.
When you were born, they refrained from feasting
It was only a girl, do not jubilate.
Wherever you go, wherever you are
To them
You are the devil to be cursed.
Tlayetmas, Tlayetmas, Tlayetmas
Tlayetmas, wrapped in pain
Tlayetmas, made of suffering
Tlayetmas, Tlayetmas, Tlayetmas
Tlayetmas, wrapped in pain
Tlayetmas, made of suffering.
