Making your calculations - A simple formula to help work out obligation from everyday spending
The act of conscience that requires us, in our expenditures, to distinguish between what is "needful" and what is not, in other words between what we need and what we want, not only is a source of spiritual growth but also can bring about innovative improvements in the way we manage our resources and live our lives. At a recent gathering for deepening in the law of Huqúqu'lláh a friend came up with a wonderful insight and a simple formula for observing the law. She said that we have learned that after we distinguish between needs and wants, our non-needful expenditures are to come out of the 81% of our wealth that has been "purified" by payment of Huqúqu'lláh.
But many of us do not have "purified" savings to use for non-needful expenditures. Our only asset may be a monthly salary that we spend in its entirety. We end up the year without the minimum accumulated wealth of one unit of Huqúq the value of 19 mithqáls or 2.2 ounces of gold (about (UK pounds)386.85) and it appears that we do not qualify for payment of Huqúqu'lláh.
Yet if we conscientiously reflect upon our spending we may find that throughout the year we are spending on what we would prefer to call "wants" instead of "needs". If we keep track of these expenditures we might find that they add up to a substantial amount. For those of us in this situation who want the privilege of observing the Right of God, here is a way: Any expenditure that we feel should have come out of our money (the 81%) and not God's (the 19%), we divide the expenditure by 0.81 and then multiply the answer by 0.19 to get the amount that we return to God.
For example, we buy something for (UK pounds)50 and we want it to come out of our money (the 81%). Dividing (UK pounds)50 by 0.81 we find that (UK pounds)50 is 81% of (UK pounds)61.73; and 19% of (UK pounds)61.73 is (UK pounds)11.73 - the amount owed as Huqúqu'lláh. We can keep the (UK pounds)11.73 in a special safe place and keep adding to it in this manner throughout the year until we periodically add it up and send a cheque to one of the Trustees of Huqúqu'lláh.

Cheques payable to: NSA of the Bahá'ís - Huqúqu'lláh
Calculation: One Huqúqu'lláh Unit = 2.224563 troy oz of gold. Value of gold on 27th March was (UK pounds)173.90 per oz, so one Huqúq Unit = (UK pounds)386.85. Once a believer's non-exempt assets reach or exceed one Huqúqu'lláh Unit, Huqúqu'lláh is payable at 19% of each Unit. 19% of (UK pounds)386.85 = (UK pounds)73.50. The current value of gold can be found in many newspapers and this website: www.goldline.co.uk
