UN rights resolution attacks Iran
A United Nations committee has attacked what it called continued human
rights abuses in Iran.
A resolution at the Social, Humanitarian and Cultural Committee referred
in particular to an unabated pattern of persecution against the minority
Baha'i faith.
It also criticised moves to raise the reward for the death of the British
author, Salman Rushdie.
But it welcomed the Iranian government's assurance that it would not
persue the death threat against Mr Rushdie.
Iran has condemned the resolution, describing it a political move.
A BBC correspondent says the resolution was milder than in previous years,
reflecting recent positive changes in Iran's human rights situation.
