WHAT: 15-year-old Collin Darrell of Swarthmore will, for the 10th
consecutive year of his young life, conduct a personal hunger
relief effort by going door-to-door distributing bags to be
filled with donated food for the Greater Philadelphia Food Bank.
WHEN: Saturday, February 13 made door-to-door bag drop-off throughout
Swarthmore;
Saturday, February 20 beginning at 9:30 a.m. -- door-to-door food
donation pick-up beginning at his home on North Chester Road;
Thursday, February 25, at 2:30 p.m., Collin and his family will
drop off the collected food at the Greater Philadelphia Food
Bank, 302 W. Berks St., in North Philadelphia.
WHERE: Last week, Collin dropped off more than 200 empty plastic bags at
homes throughout Swarthmore. This Saturday, he will follow the
same route, collecting the food donations. The following
Thursday, he will deliver the items to the Food Bank.
WHO: Collin Darrell, his 10-year-old brother Alex and friends
WHY: Like the now famous "Trevor" who took on the plight of the
homeless after seeing people sleeping on grates in center city
Philadelphia, six-year-old Collin became a crusader for hunger
relief after seeing homeless people on the streets. Every year
since that time, he has been conducting a door-to-door food drive
to collect food for distribution by the Greater Philadelphia Food
Bank.
Collin times the food drive to coincide with the religious
observance of Ayyam-I-Ha. He and his family are members of the
Baha'i faith, and this effort coincides with the end of their
year, a time traditionally devoted to charity and gift giving.
The food Collin collects will be among the 16 tons of donated food
distributed each day by the Greater Philadelphia Food Bank to
charitable organizations that feed the needy throughout
southeastern Pennsylvania.
In the 10 years of his food drive, Collin has collected enough
food to provide more than 4,000 meals to hungry families.
