Events mark Martin Luther King Jr. Day The slain civil rights leader and Nobel Peace Prize winner will be honored Monday

Kerry Kirkland, a former member of the York City School Board, will be the guest speaker Monday at the Wesley Union Community Development Corp.'s Third Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Prayer Breakfast and Awards Ceremony.

The program, called "The Dream: Remember! Celebrate! Act!," will begin at 9:30 a.m. at the Harrisburg Hilton Hotel at Second and Market streets.

Kirkland, who used to be the executive director of the Pennsylvania Democratic Party, is the associate deputy administrator for government contracting and business development for the U.S. Small Business Administration.

The public is invited to the breakfast. A $10 donation is asked for the breakfast.

Crispus Attucks Association Inc., through its Youth Against Drugs Program, presents its annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day of service festivities begin ning at 8:30 a.m. Monday. The theme for this year's festivities is "Community Unity in Action."

The traditional breakfast and celebration will focus on service and volunteering.

The guest speaker for the breakfast will be Jim Kalish, the author of "The Story of Civil Rights in York, Pennsylvania - A 250-year interpretive history."

The breakfast is free and open to the public. The association is at 605 S. Duke St., York.

A celebration to honor Martin Luther King Jr. is set for 7 p.m. Monday at the YWCA of Hanover, 23 W. Chestnut St.

Dr. David L. Lovett, a Gettysburg native, teacher and counselor at Shippensburg University will speak.

He received the 1996 Black Achiever Award from Black Opinion Magazine and the 1999-2000 editorial award from Public Opinion's Quill.

Baha'i singers will perform songs of peace and freedom.

Refreshments will be served at the free, public ceremony.
