* Broadcast of this important event will be arranged through media agencies within United States and China because of the 2001 Symposium's unique characteristics:

1.This is the first time the People's Republic of China has approved sending a large group of scholars of religion to participate in an international symposium outside of Mainland China.

2. For the first time, a bilingual symposium facilitating direct dialogue between Chinese and International top religious and secular scholars will take place.

3. This will be a unique opportunity to explore, compare and exchange views on the role of ethical and moral values to positively influence today's society.

Dear distinguished Scholars & Professionals:

The Pacific Rim Institute for Development & Education and The Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Institute of World Religions, wishes to invite you, as a recognized expert in your professional discipline, to participate in the 2001 International Multi-Cultural Symposium addressing "Current Influences of Secular Ethics and Religious Conscience."

The 2001 Symposium will afford academics and professionals from all parts of the world the opportunity to participate with Chinese scholars in a bilingual sharing of thoughts, concepts, and creative visions. The conference will provide an e xceptional occasion for engaging in academic exchanges in areas of personal and interpersonal ethics and beliefs, as well as building new international friendships and connections for future collaborative efforts.

We anticipate a fertile, mutually respectful, and lively exploration of the ethical values and spiritual issues called into question by the uncertain status of religious and secular institutions throughout the world. PRIDE and CASS have arranged that similar symposiums will be held every two or three years.

Because the Symposium will be presented in both English and Chinese, we request that those intending to present papers register prior to June 15, 2001 ( it can be extended under special circumstance), submitting at that time a one-page abstract of no more than 300 words, together with a brief autobiography not to exceed 150 words. Papers need to be review by academics for possible suggestions. Complete manuscripts, on computer disk and in paper copy, need to be received by PRIDE about July 15, 2001. Presented manuscripts will be published following the symposium.

Each abstract will be available in English and Chinese prior to the start of the conference, affording attendees with the opportunity to review them before their presentation to better facilitate the discussion period. Each individual will have approximately ten minutes for presentation of their key point, followed by a period of discussion. The conference will include seven (7) plenary sessions and five (5) group-presentation sessions. In addition, free periods during the days and evenings will provide participants with the opportunity to pursue mutual interests, share published materials, and build professional and personal relationships.

The Symposium sponsors wish to provide every participant a chance to gain maximum benefit and inspiration from the proceedings. As became evident after the Beijing conference in 1998, participation in the Symposium serves to open new horizons in thought and action. The conference will stimulate participants to transcend the bounds of theoretical research, and help create practical models for addressing problems of an ethical or moral nature.

SECTION A: SYMPOSIUM SUB-TOPICS & ABSTRACT

Each individual who has been invited to participate in the Symposium brings expertise in a particular field of research and/or practice in a discipline which impacts upon the human condition. In this era of globalization, powered by instantaneous and, for the most part, unobstructed communication, we can observe the gradual improvement, reformation, erosion, or obliteration of many social and cultural standards that have heretofore served as a fundamental guide for our thoughts and actions. Consequently, the goal of the conference is to provide a congenial forum in which to share observations and conclusions concerning the status of societal conditions, and to consider their influence, potential or actual, upon the course of national, regional and global affairs.

To the end of affording consultation on these and other matters, a number of individuals and institutions have referred topics and related questions to the Symposium Peer Review Panel for conference consideration. All papers should be submitted on disk, confirmed by Email attachment, in Microsoft Word format, Word 97 or later, or in Rich Text Format (RTF). If necessary, ASCII text can be accepted. Authors will be notified when their materials have been successfully transmitted.

A printed book of all abstracts will be available at the registration desk at the beginning of Symposium. Complete paper will be published after Symposium.

THE CHINESE ACADEMY OF SOCIAL SCIENCES (CASS): This national agency supervises the study and research of a wide variety of matters of social concern in China, including economics, language, history, philosophy, religion and more.

THE INSTITUTE OF WORLD RELIGIONS (IWR): It is one of the largest religious research institutes in the world. The institute is comprised of a number of separate departments, each of which is responsible for the research and study of a specific religious system recognized by the Central Government. Among these departments are those dedicated to Taoism, Confucianism, Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity, Islam, and Bahá'í Faith.

THE PACIFIC RIM INSTITUTE FOR DEVELOPMENT AND EDUCATION (PRIDE): This is a 501(C3) tax-exempt international, Non-governmental organization, in special consultative status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations. Conference Location and Address: The conference will be held at UCLA Sunset Village, Conference Plaza, located at 330 DeNeve Drive, 138707, Los Angeles, California, 90095-1387. Note 3: In accordance with UCLA regulations, a $20.00 cancellation fee will
be charged if a reservation is  canceled after April 15, 2001. In the event
of a cancellation after July 1, 2001, no refund will be given. The rooms at
UCLA go fast. If you register too late to get a room on campus, there is a
Holiday Inn near the conference location with a shuttle bus, with a double
room rate between $ 135 to $ 145,  not including meals.    


OBSERVER AND COMMUTER PARTICIPANT

Meals and parking tickets may be purchased separately by  those not using
accommodations on campus.  Those wishing to attend only the Grand Banquet
may purchase tickets (US$ 50 per person) for that Saturday evening banquet.
