July 24 Marks Motor City's 300th Birthday - Detroit Hosted Stevie Wonder, 24 Tall Ships and an 800-Voice Gospel Choir at July Party
Detroit Continues Unprecedented Birthday Party With Cadillac's Landing And Spiritual Day
DETROIT, July 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, Tuesday, July 24, marks the 300th birthday of Detroit -- the first Midwest city to celebrate a tricentennial. The city's birthday festival started on July 19 and continues to July 25.
-- An estimated 1.5 million experienced legendary Motown(R) recording
artist Stevie Wonder as the headliner for the Celebrity Homecoming
Concert at Detroit's Hart Plaza on July 21. Tim Allen, David Alan
Grier, The Temptations and other special guests joined Wonder. This
was Wonder's largest, free outdoor concert to date. The concert was
simulcast in two countries and three venues, including Detroit's
Comerica Park.
-- Sail Detroit(TM) and Ford Parade of Ships, July 19-22, featured over
20 tall ships that docked in Detroit and Windsor, Ontario.
-- Sounds of Detroit, July 20-22, celebrated the city's musical talent
heard around the world with Jazz Detroit, over 45 local performers
and Ms. Della Reese performed on July 20.
-- An 800-voice gospel choir performed with the internationally
acclaimed Detroit Symphony Orchestra on July 22.
-- Cadillac's Landing: A Birthday Celebration of Detroit and Its
People, presented by General Motors, will take place today from
1-4 p.m. The re-enactment will include Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac
escorted by a 50-man unit of the French Marine Corps, a 60-man unit
of Voyagers, two Native Americans, and one Jesuit Priest while
paddling down the Detroit River to land at Hart Plaza -- the actual
landing place in 1701.
-- Once known as the City of Churches, Detroit's grand finale event is
Spiritual Day, a celebration of Detroit's faith-based heritage. On
Wednesday, July 25, the faithful and faith-based leaders from
Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Buddhism, Hinduism and Bahai'i faiths,
representing hundreds of congregations will unite in the name of
belief, healing and peace. Over 6,000 people will gather at Chene
Park in Detroit from 7:00-9:30 p.m. to celebrate Detroit's largest
interfaith gathering.
