Baha'i dancers set to entertain in S Otago

BALCLUTHA -- South Otago will be treated to a rare mix of the thought-provoking and the exotic when a Hawaiian youth dance group hits town on Tuesday.

The 13 members of the Baha'i Youth Workshop combine music, dance and drama to explore the problems of the world and to offer solutions from a Baha'i perspective.

The group's dancing, including traditional dances from Hawaii, is designed for wide appeal.

"The message we convey is the unity of humanity. That is, in this colourful and diverse world we find people of all backgrounds and cultures living in harmony," a spokesman said.

Unity in diversity is a core principle of the Baha'i faith, a religion founded in Iran more than 150 years ago.

The Hawaii-based group draws on world-wide members and has travelled throughout the Pacific region for four years.

As well as visiting several schools on Tuesday, the group will conduct a free after-school dance workshop at South Otago High School's old gym from 4pm until 5.30pm.

At 7pm there will be a free public performance at the school.
