Remembrances of Sept. 11

Here is a list of some of the civic and faith-based events taking place in the region this week to mark the anniversary of Sept. 11 and to remember those who died. Additional religious services were printed in yesterday's Metro section and can be found at washingtonpost.com.

Today

7:30 p.m. -- The Capitol Hill community will host a candlelight gathering organized by the Capitol Hill Arts Workshop, Hill Havurah, the Islamic Information Center and several churches affiliated with the Interfaith Conference of Metropolitan Washington, Lincoln Park, East Capitol Street SE, between 11th and 13th streets. All day -- The Turner-Robertshaw Funeral Home will provide biodegradable helium balloons for release in memory of victims from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., 1200 N. Shenandoah Ave., Front Royal. 6 a.m. -- Loudoun County Parks, Recreation and Community Services is organizing an overnight trip to New York City. 8:30 a.m. -- The University of Maryland will mark the day with a vigil at the east end of McKeldin Mall, where a memorial garden is planned. The vigil will follow a timeline of events on Sept. 11. 8:30 a.m. -- Fairfax Memorial Park will unveil a memorial dedicated to people affected by Sept. 11, 9900 Braddock Rd., Fairfax County. 703-323-5202.

8:46 a.m. -- The Hollin Hall Senior Center invites the community to join their members in observing a moment of silence. The center will make yellow ribbons available from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. for those who want to write words of sympathy for the victims and their families, then display the ribbons at the center, 1500 Shenandoah Rd., Alexandria. 703-765-4573.

9:15 a.m. -- Arlington County will host a community-wide flag unfurling, with the county's official 30-by-60-foot flag unfurled at 9:37 a.m. when the Pentagon was attacked, Gateway Park, the foot of the Key Bridge near the Rosslyn Metro station. Residents and business are urged to display the flag at 9:37 a.m. After the 15-minute ceremony, a 3,500-pound Bell of Remembrance will toll 184 times in memory of lives lost at the Pentagon. 703-228-0785.

9:30 a.m. -- The Greenspring Village community will hold a memorial program, "Honoring America's Spirit," featuring people affected by the attacks. The program will be videotaped and rebroadcast at noon and 4 p.m., Greenspring Village Square lobby, 7410 Spring Village Dr., Springfield. RSVP at 703-923-4690.

9:45 a.m. -- The Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department will roll out fire equipment at all stations. At 10:05 a.m. and 10:28 a.m., the times the World Trade Center towers collapsed, station personnel will sound a single short blast on the air horn or ring bells, and flags will be lowered briefly to half-staff. 10 a.m. -- Loudoun County Parks, Recreation and Community Services will sponsor "Seconds of Silence," with 3,000 seconds of silence and a wall of names, Banshee Reeks Nature Preserve, 21079 The Woods Rd., Leesburg. 7 p.m. -- "Day of Remembrance," an interfaith service featuring dance and music and reflections by representatives of seven religions, George Mason University Center for the Arts, Braddock Road and Route 123, Fairfax County. 703-993-8877.

7 p.m. -- The Arlington Symphony Orchestra and a 150-member choral group will perform a concert that will feature stories from the Pentagon attack as collected and told by oral historian John Spelman, Netherlands Carillon near the U.S. Marine Corps Memorial, Arlington Boulevard and Meade Street. 7:30 p.m. -- "Building in the Aftermath," a series of lectures and exhibitions sponsored by the National Building Museum, will premiere with a lecture by architect Thom Mayne on the future development of the World Trade Center, 401 F St. NW.
