Request for inn near Point Lobos approved

The state Coastal Commission has given the go-ahead for a bed and breakfast near Point Lobos.

Commissioners this week approved an application to convert an old stone house, cottage and barn into a 10-unit bed and breakfast.

Rancho Chiquita Associates will have to follow 46 conditions, including giving final design approval to the Coastal Commission's executive director, Peter Douglas.

The Big Sur Land Trust, California State Parks Department and local environmental groups had opposed the development three years ago. But the trust and parks department agreed not to oppose the plan if the developer adheres to the conditions.

The development will not change the exterior of the buildings. The five-acre parcel is on the east side of Highway 1 on Riley Ranch Road.

Applications sought for Baha'i Human Rights Award

Nominations are being sought for the 23rd annual Baha'i Human Rights Award, which will be presented locally on Dec. 7. Awards is presented both locally and nationally to individuals who have performed exemplary service in the field of human rights as an avocation, rather than as a vocation.

For the local award, nominations are due Sept. 30. Nominations, along with a brief description of the nominee's accomplishments and an address and phone number for the nominee, should be sent to Baha'is of Monterey/Carmel, Eva Doelman, P.O. The Baha'is of the Monterey Peninsula, in conjunction with the United Nations Association of the Monterey Peninsula, will observe Human Rights Day on Dec. 7.

MONTEREY

Emergency preparednesss training scheduled for October

The city of Monterey's Neighborhood Emergency Response Team will begin a new disaster preparedness training session on Wednesday evenings from Oct. 2 to Nov. 6.

Topics will include earthquake awareness, utility control, disaster firefighting, handling hazardous materials, disaster medicine, search and rescue techniques and personal, family and workplace preparedness. Participants will receive a student manual, safety helmet and vest and a graduation certificate.

The course if free for those who live or work in Monterey, and $30 for nonresidents. It will be held from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Emergency Operations Center at Monterey City Hall. To register, contact Volunteer Services at 646-3719 or by e-mail at dillemut@ci.monterey.ca.us.

North Salinas High to hold back-to-school night

North Salinas High School will hold its back-to-school night on Wednesday.

The Booster Club will offer a tri-tip barbecue dinner for $6 at 5:30 p.m. Back to school night will follow at 6:30 p.m.

to discuss land use concepts

The Pajaro Citizens Advisory Committee will discuss the draft land use concepts for the Pajaro Community Plan starting at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Assumption Church Hall, 100 Salinas Road in Pajaro. The meeting is open to the public.
