Carpinterian to receive honor at Bahá’í Human Rights Awards Banquet

The 2002 recipients of the Human Rights Awards, sponsored by the Bahá’ís of Ventura and Western Los Angeles Counties, include Carpinterian, Ethel Hayman. According to the awards committee, Ms. Hayman’s “...accomplishments as an educator have gone far beyond the call of professional duty. Ethel Hayman exhibits leadership in the educational field. As an elementary, and now a middle school teacher, for 25 years, she has often been the sole voice advocating health education in the Oxnard School District. She has coordinated the anti-drug and tobacco education programs for the District and, for the past ten years, has chaired the AIDS/Human Growth and Development committee. Health advocate, trainer, teacher, coordinator, facilitator, leader, dream-maker and anti-drug proponent, Hayman is a gentle, kind individual whose selfless work touches many students in her quest to develop responsible, healthy individuals.”

The Bahá’í Human Rights Awards honor individuals who have contributed towards the advancement of human rights in Ventura and Western Los Angeles Counties, and commemorate the anniversary of the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights. Awards will be presented at a luncheon sponsored by 13 local assemblies of the Bahá’í Faith.

“This is our most inspiring project, because we experience how happy and energized people are when we draw their attention to local initiatives to protect the rights of others. We see the diversity of ways people care and we all become more ready to help others in need,” explains Jeff Albert, chairperson of the Baha’i Human Rights Awards Committee. “We hope the awards are a boost for the people who are honored. The banquet also offers guests a deeper understanding about the human rights needs in our area through the eyes of those who voluntarily put themselves on the front line.”

This year the awards banquet, which is in its twelfth year, will be held at the Embassy Suites, Mandalay Beach Resort in Oxnard on Dec. 8 beginning at 11:30 a.m.

The keynote speaker, Rebequa Getahoun Murphy, co-founder and director of the African Institute on Leadership and Governance, a small organization committed to promoting ethical leadership on the African continent, is currently an Associate of the International Center for Ethical Leadership at Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia, providing ethical leadership training for youth and youth service providers throughout the United States and in other parts of the world.

Attendees will also be treated to the music of Freddie Ravel, renowned jazz and R&B artist, whose musical style reflects his strong Latin roots and his lifelong passions for jazz and R&B. His diverse heritage and intense spirituality promise to bring additional excitement to this stirring celebration.
