Religious leaders discuss Iraq attack

SILVERTON – Local religious leaders and community members will offer their moral and ethical perspectives on a prospective U.S. attack on Iraq on Tuesday evening, Dec. 10, 7 - 9 p.m. at the Gathering Place, 503 N. Second, Silverton. The event is hosted by Silverton People for Peace, a group that has been meeting weekly at Town Square Park Wednesday nights.

“This is an opportunity for people to understand the interpretations our faith community, leaders from several of Oregon’s churches, has on a preemptive strike on Iraq,” said Naseem Rahka. “The church of every one of these religious leaders has put out a statement as to their scriptural view in regard to going to war unprompted.”

Panelists will include the Rev. Richard Davis, Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Salem; the Rev. Steve Mitchell, Silverton United Methodist Church; the Rev. L.D. Wood-Hull, Saint Edwards Episcopal Church, Silverton; the Rev. Joe Wood, St. Paul’s Catholic Church, Silverton; Dorothy Pendersen, Salem Baha’i Faith; Randi Embree, minister, Abundant Life Spiritual Community, Silverton; and Jeremy Shockley, Silverton High School student.
