Events lead up to Martin Luther King Day

Two area colleges and a Lake Oswego group will host events honoring Martin Luther King Jr. All are free and open to the public.

A celebration of diversity and King's birthday will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday in St. Anne's Chapel at Marylhurst University, 17600 S.W. Pacific Highway (Oregon 43).

Comic Ken Samuelson will be master of ceremonies, and the Rev. Charlene Williams of Friendship Christian Fellowship Church, Pastor Guy Gray of River West Church and Vernon Baker of Trinity Full Gospel Pentecostal Church will speak about King's life.

Musical performers will include the Trinity Full Gospel Choir, Saint Prophets Soldiers, Oak Grove Elementary Choir, River West Gospel Choir, West African dance and drum team Habiba Addo, singer Crystal Gray and pianist Randy Porter.

Offerings will be accepted at the event, which was organized by the school's Student Action Council.

The Baha'is of Lake Oswego will host an event at 2 p.m. Sunday at Lake Oswego City Hall, 380 A Ave.

Speaker Henri Cross will present a talk on "The Dream and Transformation," followed by a musical and dramatic presentation titled "Amazing Grace: A Story of Personal Transformation."

Refreshments will be served after the program.

"Give Peace a Chance" is the theme of a celebration honoring King's life and work at 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 20, in Melrose Auditorium at Linfield College, 900 S. Baker St., McMinnville.

Maryalice Russell, superintendent of McMinnville Public Schools, will deliver the keynote address. Students from Patton and Duniway middle schools and McMinnville High School will make presentations on King's life.

Chaplain David Massey will present an invocation and benediction, and Marty Williams, a Linfield senior majoring in religious studies, will perform "Lift Every Voice."
