    VANCOUVER

    Public-relations expert to speak today at Women in Action lunch

    Nationally recognized consultant Lucy Martin will speak at 11:30 a.m. today at the Women in Action luncheon at the Royal Oaks Country Club, 8917 N.E. Fourth Plain Road.

    Based in Portland, Martin runs her own 12-person public-relations firm and has represented more than 75 companies.

    Tickets for the lunch are available at the door for $17.

    Women in Action is focused on improving the leadership skills of both men and women in Southwest Washington and is involved with several volunteer efforts.

    Festival of Trees raises $135,000 for Rotary

    The Vancouver Rotary Club met its goal of raising $135,000 during Thanksgiving weekend's "Festival of Trees," its primary fund-raising event.

    About 10,000 people attended the three-day event, which included a tree lighting in Esther Short Park and concert by the Vancouver Pops.

    The main event was the seventh annual festival, which was held at the Red Lion Hotel at the Quay.

    The money will be used for student scholarships and grants for Clark County nonprofit groups.

    About 7,000 people attended the 2001 event, which raised $117,000.

    12 young women of faith to be honored Saturday

    Church Women United will honor 12 young women during a celebration Saturday that will also include a melodrama based on the biblical book of Esther.

    The event begins at 9:30 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, 309 W. 39th St., with a continental breakfast. It is free and open to the public.

    The ecumenical organization is recognizing the women for their work in their churches and the community.

    Those to be honored are:

    Michelle Sinclair, First Christian Church; Solace Burris, Bahai's; Andrea Reidell, First Congregational Church; Sandra Conrad, St. Paul Lutheran Church; Carla Olson, Trinity Lutheran Church; Keesha Goodnow, Zion Lutheran Church; Robbin Moore, Battle Ground United Methodist Church; Karen Klaus, First United Methodist Church; Kathy Hardy, Salmon Creek United Methodist Church; Jaime Helgeson, East Vancouver United Methodist Church; Lisa Barton, Columbia Presbyterian Church; and Michelle Steele, First Presbyterian Church.

    The program will continue with music performed by Jeff and Anna Haagenson. An old-fashioned melodrama will follow.

    Clark County

    C-Tran cuts back service on MLK Day

    C-Tran will operate on reduced service schedules for Monday's Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.

    The schedule will be similar to Saturday service levels, but will offer commuter service to Portland as well. Service will be less frequent and end earlier.

    These routes will not operate: No. 93 (Southeast 34th/Lacamas); No. 114 (Camas/ Washougal Limited), No. 135 (Ridgefield Express); No. 157 (Lloyd Center/BPA Limited); No. 173 (Battle Ground Limited and No. 177 (Evergreen Express).
