Lottery to determine ballot position for Dist. 211 hopefuls
Palatine-Schaumburg High School District 211 will be holding a special lottery on Thursday.
No, fabulous prizes and cash giveaways are not up for grabs, but the first spot on the April election ballot.
Because seven people filed their nominating petitions for the school board simultaneously at 8 a.m. on Jan. 13, the district will hold a
special lottery to determine their ballot position.
The lottery will be held at 4 p.m. on Thursday at the G.A. McElroy Administration Center, 170 S. Roselle Road in Palatine.
The seven candidates who filed on Jan. 13 are Gerald D. Chapman, Lynn Davis, Robert J. Lefevre Jr., Bill Lloyd, Debra Strauss, Martha E.
Swierczewski and Daniel L. Yokas.
Moving on up: Lost in the announcement that Fremd High School Principal Shirley Mertz was leaving the school for an assistant
superintendent position was the promotion of Jeffrey Butzen.
The district board approved the appointment of Butzen, currently the district's director of instructional improvement, to assistant
superintendent for curriculum, effective July 1.
Butzen will coordinate curriculum development for all academic areas, career development, educational technology, and student activities
and athletics following the retirement of Assistant Superintendent Jack Gaza on June 30.
Barrington fashion shows unity in diversity: Barrington High School's multicultural club is getting ready to strut down the catwalk.
The club's fashion show, which takes place on Jan. 31 at Barrington High School, will allow students to model clothing representative of a
variety of cultures, including Mexican, Hmong, Greek, Polish, Korean, Indian, African and Chinese. The purpose of the show is to foster
unity in diversity. Other club activities include a trip to the Bahai Temple in Wilmette and panel discussions on different forms of
cultural expression.

The big days are set: The day many seniors in the district have been waiting for, graduation day, has been set by each school.
Graduation for students at Palatine, Fremd, Conant and Schaumburg high schools will be at 2 p.m. on June 8 at their respective schools.
Hoffman Estates High School will hold its graduation ceremony at 6 p.m. June 10 at Willow Creek Church in South Barrington.
Barrington presents landscape photography: The Clair E. Smith Art Gallery at Barrington High School will be presenting an exhibit of Stan
Jorstad's landscape photographs.
A specialist in panoramic photography, Jorstad currently has a traveling photography exhibit in conjunction with the Smithsonian Institute
and the National Geographic Society. His book, "These Rare Lands," revels in the beauty of America's natural parks. He is a native of St.
Charles.
The Clair E. Smith gallery is on the campus of Barrington High School and the gallery is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m
Monday through Friday.
