Hundreds gather to pray for world peace

JOHOR BARU: Over 500 people of different faiths and cultures congregate d here on Thursday night to pray for world peace, portraying that the Malaysian spirit transcends race and religion.

Buddhists, Christians, Hindus, Sikhs and Baha’is attended the gathering at the Dewan Jubli Intan here, which was organised by the Malaysian Consultative Council for Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism and Sikhism (Johor branch) together with the Johor Spiritual Assembly of Baha’is.

Leading the prayers were Bishop Paul Tan, the new Catholic Bishop for the Diocese of Malacca and Johor; Malaysian Buddhist Association (Johor) chairman Venerable Sit Chan Liang; and Malaysian Hindu Sangam (Skudai) chairman Dr M. Muthu Sharma.

In his speech, Bishop Tan said the Malaysian society could help promote world peace by speaking the truth with humility and love, forgiving each other, and accepting others regardless of race or religion.

He said that multi-racial Malaysia was a good example that peace was attainable and people of different races and religions could live in harmony.
