Peace Vigil set Sept. 11 on The Green
2:05 p.m., Sept. 5, 2003--A peace vigil will be held at 7 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 11, on The Green on the north side of Memorial
Hall.
Sponsored by the Religious and Spiritual Life Concerns Caucus of UDs Commission to Promote Racial and Cultural Diversity, the free
public event is designed to bring the community together to remember the events of two years ago.
According to the Rev. Laura Lee C. Wilson, chair of the Religious and Spiritual Life Concerns Caucus, executive director and campus pastor
at the Wesley Foundation Campus Ministry at UD and one of the vigil organizers, We want to lift our concerns for peace for all
Gods people around the world. Acts of terrorism are still happening today. Far too many people are losing their lives over the
political power struggles and greed in this world.
The evening will affirm the desire and the call for peace for the faith traditions represented on our campus, she said.
The vigil will be held on the second anniversary of the terrorist attacks in New York City and Virginia, and the main speakers will
be Rabbi Eliezer Sneiderman, the Chabad Center for Jewish Life; Father Michael Szupper, St. Thomas More Oratory; Grant Wolf, Baha'i
Community; and Ismat Shah, Muslim Student Association.
Other members of the Religious and Spiritual Life Concerns Caucus will lead the candle lighting and words for the healing of all nations.
Candles will be provided.
In the event of rain, the vigil will move to Bayard Sharp Hall.
Just hours after the 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, more than 4,000 persons from the campus and from Newark
attended a candlelight vigil on The Green, also sponsored by the Religious and Spiritual Life Concerns Caucus.
Last year, on the first anniversary of Sept. 11, the caucus held an interfaith service at noon in Mitchell Hall. That evening, a
candlelight commemoration on The Green south of Memorial Hall included reflections from faculty and students on the events of the past
year.
