Interfaith prayer event to mark 'International Day of Peace'

Prayers to be offered for U.N. peacekeepers

The United Nations' annual "International Day of Peace" will be observed in New Orleans on Sept. 20 with an interfaith prayer assembly and social at First United Methodist Church, 3401 Canal St.

Prayers at the service will be offered especially for the U.N. peacekeeping forces in Iraq, who are themselves under fire.

Leaders of the 11 a.m. service will include the Rev. Dr. Dwight Ramsey, a member of the United Nations Association in New Orleans; Marcel Chung of the Buddhist Association of Louisiana; Professor Murty Akundi of the S.V.V.S. Hindu Temple; and Parviz Mojgani of the Baha'i Spiritual Assembly. Representatives of the Islamic, Jewish, Shinto, Taoist and Confucianist faiths are expected as well.

Special guests include the Consular Corps of New Orleans and its dean, Gonzalo Calderon, consul general of Costa Rica, as well as the Dancers and Drummers of St. Peter Claver Roman Catholic Church.

The service will be followed by a reception at which international dishes will be served. The service and social are open to the public.
