Baha'i "Facts"?

In my days as a Baha'i youth I was taught certain facts. Sadly, I was too young to question them, rather I accepted what I was taught at face value. Now I am wishing I had asked the references, because I wonder as to whether they were hearsay or truth. Many a rumour is spread by those who innocently believe without facts.

My question is this: I was taught that the Lesser Peace would be preceeded by a disaster that would be catastrophic. The figure of 20% of the Earth's population would perish. This would occur before the turn of the century. The older I get the more this starts to sound like a legend. Is there anything in the writings that would back a statement such as this? Or is it, as I suspect, less than truth? Perhaps it is my faulty memory that is the culprit. Or possibly there is something similar.

Thank you for your attention to this.
