Dear distinguished Scholars & Professionals:
The Pacific Rim Institute for Development & Education and The ChineseAcademy of Social Sciences, Institute of World Religions, wishes to invite you,as a recognized expert in your professional discipline, to participate at the2001 International Multi-Cultural Symposium on the topic "Current Influences ofSecular Ethics and Religious Conscience."
The 2001 Symposium will afford academics and professionals from all parts ofthe world the opportunity to participate with Chinese scholars in theBI-lingual sharing of thoughts, concepts, and creative vision. The conferencewill offer the occasion for academic exchange in areas of personal andinterpersonal ethics and beliefs.
We anticipate a fertile, mutually respectful, and lively exploration of thoseethical values and spiritual issues called into question by the uncertainstatus of religious and secular institutions throughout the world. PRIDE andCASS have arranged that similar symposiums will be held every two or threeyears.
Inasmuch as the Symposium is bilingual (English and Chinese), we request allthose who intend to present papers at the 2001 Symposium to registerprior to April 15, 2001. At the time ofregistration, please submit a one-page abstract; together with a briefautobiography. The abstract should not exceed 300 words, and autobiographicalmaterials not to exceed 150 words. Presenters will be notified of theacceptance of their papers no later than May 15, 2001. The completemanuscript, on computer disk and in paper copy, must be submitted priorto June 15, 2001.
Since each abstract will be printed in English and Chinese prior to opening ofthe conference, attendees will have the opportunity to peruse all documentsbefore presentation and thereby facilitate the discussion period. Eachindividual will have approximately ten minutes for presentation, which will befollowed by a period of discussion. The conference will include seven (7)plenary sessions and five (5) group-presentation sessions. In addition, freeperiods during the day and evenings will provide individuals with theopportunity to pursue mutual interests, and to share published material.
The Symposium sponsors wish to permit every participant to gain maximum benefitand inspiration from the proceedings. As became evident subsequent to theBeijing conference in 1998, participation in the Symposium serves to open newhorizons in thought and action. The event builds new international friendshipsand opportunities for further collaboration. The conference will stimulatesparticipants to transcend the bounds of theoretical research, to help createpractical models for the purpose of addressing problems of an ethical or moralnature.

SECTION A: SYMPOSIUM SUB-TOPICS
Each individual who has been invited to participate in the Symposium bringsexpertise in a particular field of research and/or practice in a disciplinewhich impacts upon the human condition. In this era of globalization, poweredby instant, and, for the most part, unobstructed, communication, we can observethe gradual improvement, reformation, erosion, or obliteration of many socialand cultural standards that have heretofore served as a fundamental guide forour thoughts and actions. Consequently, the goal of the upcoming conference isto provide a congenial forum in which to share observations and conclusionsconcerning the status of societal conditions, and to consider their influence,potential or actual, upon the course of national, regional and globalaffairs.

However, if they decide not to stay overnight atUCLA, they may select only conference meals and parking ticket for purposes ofparticipating in the conference. The registration and materials fee willremain the same as for other participants. Those wishing to attend the GrandBanquet only, may purchase tickets for that evening at US$40 per person.
