The second successor to Shaykh Ahmad Asa'i (after Siyyid Kazim) of whom you inquire, was Shaykh Muhammad Karim Khan Kirmani. He was opposed to Hadrati Bab, and you are correct to note that this is the same shaykh immortalized by mention of his book "Irshadu'l-Avam" (Guidance unto the ignorant)in Hadrati Baha'u'llah's Kitab-i-Iqan, in which it was strongly criticzed for its arrogance in tone, and use of "vain and discarded learnings" and pseudo-sciences to explain the Mi'raj. Shaykh Karim was not appointed successor by Siyyid Kazim, and in fact, some of the writings of the former was censured by the later, and Shaykh Karim fostered beliefs and doctrines that put him at odds with Siyyid Kazim.

Siyyid Kazim did not appoint a successor but rather instructed his followers to spread out far and wide in search of the Qa'im. The shaykhi's who did not follow this intsruction, looked to Mulla Hussain to take on the leadership but Mulla Hussain critized them for not leaving Karbila in search of the Qa'im.

It was after this that the leadership came to Shaykh Karim, probably because he was the most learned of those who did not spread out in search of the Qa'im, although I am not sure of the nature of the events that put Shaykh Karim in the position of the head of the Shaykhis school.
