I believe the metaphor "theif in the night" is a forcast that many would be asleep spiritually and hence unaware that the Return had occured or was about to occur. For those few who remained spiritually "awake", the signs and the time of His Return given in scripture were understood, and hence a few recognized the Manifestation's return during His own lifetime.
