If the reference in the Bible to speaking in tongues was a literal miracle, it should be pointed out (as I recall) that Christ's disciples spoke in tongues while they were teaching the Faith--to those who would not have otherwise been able to hear the message--not that they were just speaking languages for no apparent reason or to show off their spirituality (Baha'u'llah's reference to the official wasting his life by learning many languages should show the need for language (and other learning) to be tied to practical necessities).

You are probably familiar with the pilgrim's note about the farmer who was irritated about the "rude man" who kept interrupting 'Abdu'l-Baha (His interpreter). The man because of his inner purity was able to understand 'Abdu'l-Baha without the need of an interpreter.

I seem to recall also a pilgrim's note that 'Abdu'l-Baha had prayed for God to grant Him the ability to understand Arabic since He was already too old to learn a new language and that He was granted this power.

Sorry, but I do not have sources for any of the above paraphrased pilgrim's notes.
