I don't know alot about this, but am currently reading "Founding Brothers" about the early years of the American democracy. Interestingly, the founders were very much aware of the fact that the equality of all men meant that slavery needed to be abolished. But it was too impractical at that stage, because they were trying to form a nation and the issue was so divisive (north vs. south) that it would have broken up the union before it even got started. My point is that although emancipation was not proclaimed formally until the 1860's, it was embedded in the thoughts and minds of the revolutionary generation. In that sense, America was the first to proclaim "liberty for all". Kendal
