Only a little related, but taking "tongues" in the Christian sense, I had always assumed it referred to talking in spiritual language, which, in the context of the times, was so advanced and incredible for the people who witnessed it, that they considered it a miracle, another language, or something like that.

I did a search using Ocean, but didn't find any reference to tongues.
