Although I have not seen this explicitly confirmed in authoritative Bahá'í scripture, since you mentioned the 12th Imám never returning until 1844, although we can accept this spiritually, in that the Spirit of God animating the Imáms and subsequently the Báb did not perish in between their times, on a physical level, however, there is the following pilgrim's note of Shoghi Effendi:

"The important thing to remember about the 12th Imam is that he died - not disappeared - died."
