Using the Names of God for Healing:
List of 405 Names of God

Baha’u’llah tells us:

Thy name is my healing, O my God . . . (Baha’u’llah, Baha’i Prayers, p. 85)

If we want to be healed then, it’s important to understand what He means by this.

What are the names of God?

I’ve put together a list of 405 names of God culled from the Long Healing Prayer and from a list given by Amatu’l-Bahá Rúhíyyih Khánum in her book “The Desire of the World”, p. 167-186. They are presented in alphabetical order.

Healing is a complex process involving body, mind and spirit, and won’t just happen by saying a single prayer, no matter how many times we recite it or how fervently we say it.

Prayer must be followed by action:

Prayer and meditation are very important factors in deepening the spiritual life of the individual, but with them must go also action and example, as these are the tangible result of the former. Both are essential. (Shoghi Effendi, Lights of Guidance, p. 456)

As you read through this list, try to imagine which names of God are necessary to your own healing.

I recommend you write down the 10 that resonate with you the most, meditate on them and decide what actions are required on your part to advance your healing.

For example, one that resonates with me is “the Unfastener”. Every time the Unfastener has been at work in my life, it’s sounded like Velcro ripping apart; and felt like a Band-Aid pulling hair out of my skin when it’s ripped off. It HURTS! The pain of each of these tests is excruciating, whether He’s been unfastening me from people I love; jobs I’m attached to; or locations I’ve been living in!

When I meditate on the meaning of the “Unfastener” as a name of God here for my healing, I realize God is helping me to let go of something or someone I thought I needed in my life; and the best way to heal is to recognize I need to detach, forgive and move on to something better. The actions I need are forgiveness, and thankfully, there’s a name of God who can help me with this too – “The Forgiver” stands ready to forgive me for my unhealthy attachments; and can help me forgive the person who is leaving or causing me to leave.

Another example that resonates with me is the name “The Best Lover”. With the help of the Universal House of Justice, and to keep my son safe from my parent’s abusive practices, I separated myself from them (they ultimately lost their right of parenthood). My brothers turned against me and haven’t spoken to me since, no matter how often I’ve tried to make amends. My marriage didn’t survive it; two significant relationships I’ve been in since didn’t last, and my son has asked me not to contact him! God has “unfastened” me from everyone I’ve loved!

When I pray for healing, I’m reminded that He is my “Best Lover”. When I’ve meditated on that, I’ve come to realize that the purpose of all of our lives is to know and worship God:

I bear witness, O my God, that Thou hast created me to know Thee and to worship Thee. (Baha’u’llah, Short Obligatory Prayer, Baha’i Prayers, p. 3)

He’s “unfastened” me, so that I could draw closer to Him and make Him my “Best Lover”. The actions I need to take were to let go of my self-pity, blame, hurt and self-hatred, trusting that He’s not going anywhere, and is everything I need and more.

One day when I really needed to be held and comforted, remembering to turn to Him as my “Best Lover”, I asked Him to put his arms around me. I promptly fell into a deep and restful sleep and woke up refreshed and happy. And grateful! Profoundly grateful!
