Chapter 7

7. John Chang Fulfills a Goal of the Ten Year Crusade

With the encouragement of the National Spiritual Assembly of North East Asia, Mr. John Chang spent two weeks traveling in Hainan Island, a large island off the coast of China. It was one of the 131 goal areas listed by the Guardian to be opened during the Ten Year Crusade. At that time only Chinese were permitted entry; non-Chinese could not obtain visas.

Mr. Chang went with his wife and child as he said it would attract less attention. When he arrived in Haikow, Hainan, August 19, 1959, he sent a cable to Macau informing the community of his arrival. After he returned to Macau he mailed the cable to the National Spiritual Assembly in Tokyo. He reported later that some people showed interest in the Faith but said they would not dare to join a religion at that time.

As Mr. Chang fulfilled the goal his name will be entered on the Roll of Honor of the Knights of Bahá'u'lláh, to be placed at the entrance of the Shrine of Bahá'u'lláh in Bahji in 1992.
